Minecraft armor trims are one of the most anticipated features coming to 1.20, so it's no surprise plenty of players want the lowdown on exactly how this new feature works. While armor trimming has existed for a long time in the world of mods, armor customisation is now set to enter vanilla Minecraft, making it more accessible than ever.

In this guide we’ll go over what armor trimming is, where you can find the necessary new items for it, and how to trim armor. If you’re looking to broaden your knowledge of what's coming in 1.20 and want a guide on the Minecraft archeology system or the Minecraft Sniffer mob, we’ve got you covered there, too.

Armor trim smithing templates – or armor trims colloquially – are the new item you’ll need in order to create stylised new designs on your armor. There are a total of 16 in the game, with many only being available in certain structures or locations. Here are all of the Minecraft armor trims and their locations:

In addition to these templates, there's also a netherite upgrade smithing template, however this is not an armor trim. Instead, the netherite upgrade template will be a required item for upgrading diamond gear to netherite gear. It can be found in Bastion Remnant structures in the Nether.

Once you’ve acquired the armor trim smithing templates you want to use, you’ll be able to start applying trims to your armor sets using a smithing table. You’re also going to need crystals, gems, ores, or ingots to choose your colour. These are the ores you can use to choose the colour of your trim:

To put trims on your armor, select your chosen template, armor piece, and ore. Take them to a smithing table, place your chosen template in the left-most slot, followed by your armor piece, and then your ore. This will produce your chosen armor trim design, as illustrated below.

Taking into account the total number of variations of leather armor, which can also be trimmed, there are more than a mind-boggling 5 octillion design combinations you’ll be able to create.

That's everything you’ll need to know about all minecraft armor trims, and how to trim armor. If you’re all set on style, but want to change your username to better fit your new drip, check out our guide on how. Or, if you’ve not had your fill of 1.20 content yet, take a look at the Minecraft camel, also set to arrive in the coming update.

To put trims on your armor, select your chosen template to determine pattern, armor piece, and ore/ingot/crystal to determine colour. Take them to a smithing table, place your chosen template in the left-most slot, followed by your armor piece, and then your ore/ingot/crystal.
