Throughout the series, players encounter various monsters, Non-Player Characters that must be defeated to level up. These monsters, ranging from giant beasts to demon lords, are some of the series' most memorable and powerful foes. Here are the most powerful monsters in Sword Art Online, their abilities, strengths, and significance to the anime.
Nicholas The Renegade appeared on Christmas Eve, wielding a giant battle axe and boasting four health bars. Its arrival marked the first time an event boss skipped the closed beta test, making information about it scarce. However, rumors circulated that defeating Nicholas would yield an incredibly rare item capable of reviving a player from death.
Kirito, desperate to revive Sachi and unravel her final words, accepted the quest to battle Nicholas. The battle ended in Kirito obtaining the coveted Divine Stone of Returning Soul and discovering that the item could only revive players who had died within ten seconds of activation. Nicholas proved to be one of the few bosses who nearly defeated Kirito.
Kraken, the Abyss Lord, initially disguised as the Non-Player Character Nerakk, was the boss of the Deep Sea Plunderers' quest in the Undersea Temple. Kraken, an octopus-like creature with red eyes, six giant tentacles, and two smaller ones, has seven HP bars and is capable of regenerating its damaged tentacles.
He aims to steal the Child's Egg as revenge against the Aesir; however, since a magical barrier protects the Undersea Temple, he has to be disguised as a human to enlist help from fairies. Kraken's stats are higher than those of New Aincrad Floor Bosses, and he can easily defeat opponents, as shown when it dispatched Kirito, Klein, Agil, and Lisbeth in mere moments.
X'rphan, the White Wyrm, was a Field Boss at the top of West Mountain on the 55th Floor of Aincrad. X'rphan was a white-winged dragon with ice-like crystal shards covering its body. The dragon produced a rare mineral called Crystallite Ingot within its body. However, the mineral could be found within the dragon's lair as its excrement.

It attacked with claw slashes, freezing breath, and a blizzard assault. Its breath attack was a wave of white gas released from its huge jaws after a hardened sound. To perform a blizzard attack, it flew high and beat its wings forward, causing the snow below to move. Due to its flying ability, players needed long-range weapons like halberds or throwing weapons to bring the monster down.
Illfang, the Kobold Lord, was the 1st boss in Sword Art Online's Aincrad, with four HP bars and Ruin Kobold Sentinel minions that spawned during the battle. It had a red muscular body with copper-red eyes and wielded a bone axe, a leather shield, and a nodachi weapon. As its last HP bar depleted to a third, Illfang would switch to the nodachi, allowing the use of Katana skills.
Unknown to the beta testers, its attack patterns had changed, and when Diavel, a beta tester, tried to use his exclusive knowledge, he became the first player to die during a boss battle. A raid party of forty-four players finally managed to defeat Illfang, and Kirito dealt the last attack, earning the Coat of Midnight as a bonus reward.
The Skull Reaper, boss of Aincrad's 75th Floor Labyrinth, had the appearance of a skeletal insect, possessing a long skull-shaped head and razor-edged bones for arms and legs. With a single strike, it could easily cut down players, making it the deadliest Labyrinth boss, claiming 14 player lives.
Its short combo attacks inflicted massive damage and required multiple players to block successfully. Its fast movements made it difficult to avoid and it had an irregular targeting pattern, making it a formidable foe. Asuna's timely intervention prevented it from claiming another victim.
The Hidden Dungeon beneath the Town of Beginnings on the 1st Floor of Aincrad is home to the formidable boss, The Fatal Scythe. This massive, legless skeleton wears a tattered black robe with a large silver scythe. The boss prefers to attack from the shadows, making it hard to detect. It can deal a devastating blow with just one swing from its scythe, as Kirito and Asuna found out when they lost half their HP just by blocking its attack.

Kirito believed the boss was as strong as those on the 90th Floor. Asuna and Kirito fought The Fatal Scythe to rescue Yulier's guild leader, Thinker. The boss's battle level was unknown, but Yui's intervention was necessary to defeat it and save Kirito and Asuna from certain death.
The 74th Floor in Sword Art Online was ruled by The Gleam Eyes, a formidable demon monster with blue skin, a goat-like head, twisted horns, and a massive zanbato blade. This boss could shoot purple energy spheres from its mouth. Asuna and Kirito discovered the boss but had to gather allies for the battle since The Gleam Eyes had immense strength.
The boss room was unique in that players could not teleport out of it. The boss attacked with both sword and fists, killing several players and forcing Kirito to use his dual-wielding skill for the first time. With his Dual Blades, Kirito was able to defeat the Gleam Eyes without the need for a strategy meeting.
An Incarnation of the Radius was initially designed as the final boss of Sword Art Online's 100th Floor, but it was replaced when the game became a death trap. After SAO was cleared, the boss data was rediscovered and reactivated by Professor Shigemura Tetsuhiro, who used its language engine for a new AI.
The boss had ten Hit Point bars, numerous attacks, weapons, and the ability to heal during combat. It was almost unbeatable, requiring a combined effort from players to defeat it. In 2026, Kirito led a group to defeat the boss and prevent the professor from conducting a dangerous brain scan on SAO survivors at the New National Stadium.
